Dear Otis,

THUNDERSTRUCK means you have been gobsmacked, flummoxed, and flabbergasted...all at the same time.

(Oh, and you might have been hit by lightning, to boot!)

Dozy, I looked up gobsmack...well it seems you are correct (as usual), this word I thought must extend back AT LEAST to the time of Shakespeare if not Chaucer...well it originated 1980's!

It just seemed to appear overnight. I'd never heard it and then it was all over the TV. It doesn't take long for that sort of word to make its way into teentalk and from there becomes part of the language. It's probably in the Oxford Dictionary by now.

Well...I just checked that...and Oxford Online at least does not yet condescend to give a definition, but they do offer sentences illustrating the use of the word...

"a gobsmacking 49 percent of the world's fashion luxury goods are bought by the Japanese, mainly when travelling."

I think I'm taking it off the list of favourites...ty...
