I used to be really fearful, but I had a great dentist when we lived in Virginia. He really put me at ease and scheduled extra time for me so we could take a break if I needed it. If my insurance would cover an out of state dentist, I would go and see him now. Even though I can't see him, he has taught me to ask for the time and the breaks, which has helped with the dentist I have seen since.

Cookie...when I was in Iowa, there was a non-profit org that did basic dental work and a little beyond...here in Washington, no such thing so very difficult here for folks like me.
Even in Iowa, for more specialized procedures you were on your own.

Anyway you have prolly checked into non-profit resources like that, but just thought it could not hurt to mention.

Also, dental care is one of the areas drastically overlooked for folks less well-heeled, and the ability to chew well is so extremely important to good health. As a retired health care worker and low-income also now, makes me frustrated.

Oh...you mean you might have, or might get, some dental infections? With their tendency to spread?
If there were any way possible, yes to somehow get those resolved. Oh, I wish I knew of something, Dear Cookie Roma.

No, but I don't like going. The last hygenist I saw was way too rough--I don't think it's necessary to make my gums bleed in several spots -_-

My dentist had to replace his hygienist and chose a woman I nick-named the "German Butcher."

I continued to use the dentist, but I told him that I would not have her clean my teeth a second time. I used the hygienist of another specialist until she was replaced.

No, not anymore. I really like my Dentist and they treat me very good there. I used to fear it but after seeing their work, I no longer have any fear of This Dentist but like Otis, I do fear the bill. Oh well, I'll live.

I never really understood that fear. Not to be rude to anyone who does, but I just find it kind of random. Sure, I disliked some dentists, but nothing was scary about them

The dentist I had a child was not a nice man. I am lucky my mother always went in with me. I had a friend who did not get enough Novocain and when she yelled he slapped her.

Fear of the dentist can involve things other than the dentist and the procedures he performs.

For instance, I do not like to be laid back in a chair and not be able to move.  (Claustrophobia, probably)

Took me quite a while to overcome that.

Also, truly "painless" dentistry has only been my experience for the last 20 years or so---so for years, I was always anticipating intense pain sooner or later.

Also, when I was about 6, I went to the dentist's office with my mother.  As we left the treatment room, I happened to look into another room and saw a patient getting what I now know was a numbing injection.  Unfortunately, the needle and syringe looked like something out of a horror movie; and the perspective I had made it look like he was injecting it into her brain through the roof of her mouth.

That seemed to take forever to overprogram mentally.
