Speaking of the move from traditional publishing to eBooks, Douglas Adams wrote, "Lovers of print are simply confusing the plate for the food." What do you think about that? Do you enjoy eBooks as much as print copies?

Ebooks are convenient for travelling. (And in a latter part of my life I spent time creating them, so I ought to like them). But a real book, that you can hold, read in bed, fold over a corner and put on a shelf (and in a small way is a little work of art (or craft at least)) is just SOHH much nicer. I have nearly 2300 books around the house. Sadly, I have to "lose" over half of them in the next few months. Anyone want some books?

That's the thing that's moving me toward eBooks -- they take up so little space. I've never counted my books but there are lots and I periodically donate them to the charity shops to make room for more. Some of the favourites remain, of course.

Dozy this has turned out one of your really good questions, co you think?

I'm not sure. I've been trying to ask questions that generate discussion so, yes, it's done that. I went for a long time without offering any questions at all then Jaimie prodded me a couple of months ago.

What's interesting is that some of the questions I felt were pretty lame have generated some of the best responses.

It was like that while I was writing my Tall Tales column. The feedback I got from the editor was quite extraordinary. Sometimes I'd come up with something I thought was a bit on the weak side but he loved them. In the two years I wrote that column he only ever failed to publish one of them.

I don't use paper books anymore. All I use is Google Play Books and Amazon Kindle. Death to the paperback!

I much prefer Amazon Kindle! Google Play Books is great too but Kindle is better in my opinion.

Corey if you don't mind lots of Q...Kindle has Paperwhite, Voyage, and Oasis...do you have experience or preference among those?

I can't read too much at the moment because of the issue with my eye muscles. I'd choose paper books, not a fan of electronic screens. You can't sniff an ebook, and I love the library and old antique book shops. Picking up a book written in the 1500's or 1800s is an experience in of itself, just holding it and wondering who else has? Fantastic feeling, almost like time travel. It will be a sad day if those shops ever close, I could spend all day in them reading through ancient and unusual text, an ebook could never give you that magical experience.

I have a beautiful old copy of Scott's poetry. It's well over 100 years old and carries lots of the kind of notes they don't publish any more.

One thing about eBooks that might be useful to you though. You can alter the size and type of the font which would make them easier to read.

Yes, right now I do. I have a whole library of books, but I have only been buying ebooks for about 6 years now. There are 3 reasons why I prefer ebooks. I can hear about a book, buy it, download it and start reading it, all under 2 minutes. I have a library of 1000 books on my cloud and on my device, it takes up no physical room. My kindle has a light, so I can read anywhere at night.

I will always love the smell and the feel of a book, but the above reasons are just too convenient to ignore. However, I will never read a magazine from my kindle. I must feel a glossy magazine page. So, in my mind I've compromised. I'm not completely lost to the virtual world.

I saw a woman with a dragonfly tattooed on her shoulder today. I'd have loved to photograph it for you but she looked mean.

One other use for eReaders. I can download library books via the Net about as easily as your "two minutes".

Very interesting question and beautiful answers for both sides! WOW! I like physical books but won't hesitate to try an e-book if I ever get a chance. 😆

Thanks, Yin. I started reading library eBooks on my Samsung Galaxy. It's not a bad screen as far as phones go and I thought it was great. Then my daughter showed me her eReader and I bought one. I like it just fine.

And, yeah, I'm surprised at how many answers have been given and how much detail they've given.

I didn't think print books had such an impact on people. I love their descriptions! It is like I am holding a book in my hand! I love it! Thank you for asking the question for sure!

Not only is a paper book a sensory joy, but it is much more comfortable to curl up with on the sofa on a rainy afternoon.  Also, if it isn't all that good, you can still use it as a coastger..

Listen to this song---it's a short one.

Then see if you can replace one line of the lyrics "leather bound books with the pages all curled" with something that refers to an eBook.

Also, I suspect that Douglas Adams is as unaware of the relationship between various wines and the shape of the containers in which they are presented to an appreciative oenologist as he of of the relationship of a bibliophile to his beloved printed books.

Breathes there the man with soul so dead ???  I guess so.

I don't know if it's some kind of geoblock, Tom, but although I got to the link I got no music. So I searched for it on YouTube and ran into the same thing. Strange.

I worked it out. Although my computer was allowing sound, for some reason I the sound from the site was blocked. Cleared that and listened. Nice song. And, no, I can't think of a single thing to fill in.

I like the feel of holding a page in between my fingers as I read with anticipation as to what is going to happen next. It gives you something tangible to hang on to as you read. E-books can't give you that.

One advantage with a printed book is the ability to flick back 'x' number of pages to pick up something you overlooked. You can do it with e-books, too, but it takes so much longer.
