It's done partially for population control for certain animals. Animals such as deer can be easily overpopulated and since they are voracious eaters, they could leave entire parts of the forest barren.
I found the best thing was to have a hawk live nearby. Unfortunately once the squirrel population dwindles the hawk moves on and now the squirrels have returned.
