It's called a bad master cylinder or someone didn't bleed your brakes properly. More than likely a bad master cylinder as when they wear out, you lose hydraulic pressure causing a soft pedal and eventually failure.
I think it's called a bleeding brakes.... One time mechanic told me I had bleeding brakes and that's all I know about that. I think spongy brakes and soft brakes are the same thing. Just buy a new car then and it will be fine.

Put Winter tires on them. They make lots of noise. (true they wear down more rapidly, and are more expensive, but you must pay for noise)

They are definitely quiet, I drove a Ford fusion hybrid and when you're running on battery....you have no idea the car is even running....maybe fake engine noise needs to play through the radio

sounds like tranny needs to be adjusted if automatic but if a standard transmission, then it could be the clutch is shot and needs to be replaced and hope you have a great Mechanic as a good friend. Good luck
